Cynthia Erivo to Return to the West End in Solo Dracula

Emmy, Tony, and Grammy Award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo will return to the West End early next year in a solo adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Erivo will take on the challenging role of portraying all 23 characters in this exciting new production, directed by Tony Award nominee Kip Williams.

About the Dracula Solo Production

This innovative solo adaptation of Dracula will bring a fresh perspective on the iconic Gothic tale. Directed by Kip Williams, who previously helmed Sarah Snook's successful solo performance in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, the production will feature a fusion of live video, pre-recorded capture, and on-stage performance. This marks the final installment of a Gothic trilogy created by Williams, originally staged in Australia with the Sydney Theatre Company.

Williams shared his excitement about the project, stating: “I am thrilled to be returning to the West End to direct my adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and to collaborate with the extraordinary Cynthia Erivo, as she brings to life the many iconic characters of this much-adored tale. Our production expands upon Stoker’s exploration of the tension between fear and desire, offering a contemporary perspective on the vampire as a monster that lurks not beyond, but within.”

Cynthia Erivo’s Return to the Stage

Cynthia Erivo expressed her excitement about returning to the stage with such a rich and haunting story. She said: “Returning to the stage feels like a homecoming, one that I’ve been craving for a long time. To do so with a story as rich, complex, and haunting as Dracula offers a beautiful opportunity to delve into character, into myth, and into the heart of what makes us human."

Erivo went on to explain that she couldn’t stop thinking about the role once it was offered to her: “Kip’s vision is thrilling, terrifying, and deeply resonant, offering a chance to sit with not only the darkness in the world but also the light we fight to hold onto.” She also acknowledged the challenge of playing 23 characters: “It’s a rare gift for an actor to inhabit so many voices and perspectives in one piece, and I’m honoured to do it for West End audiences in this extraordinary production. The prospect of doing this show scares me and I know it will be a huge challenge. This show will ask everything of me — and I’m ready to give it.”

The Creative Team Behind Dracula

The production reunites Kip Williams with many members of the award-winning creative team from The Picture of Dorian Gray. The creative team includes:

  • Designer: Marg Horwell

  • Lighting Designer: Nick Schlieper

  • Composer: Clemence Williams

  • Sound Designer: Jessica Dunn

  • Video Designer: Craig Wilkinson

  • Dramaturg: Zahra Newman

This talented team will work together to bring a bold, modern take on the classic Dracula story to the stage.
