The Arts Theatre has announced plans to open a new temporary venue at Marble Arch this summer while its West End home undergoes major redevelopment works. The new semi-permanent theatre will seat 550 people and aims to continue the organisation’s programming during the closure.

The Arts Theatre is currently closed for refurbishment, having most recently hosted The Choir of Man.

New 550-seat theatre planned for summer opening

The new venue, titled Arts Theatre at Marble Arch, will feature a 17-metre-wide stage, a grandstand-style auditorium and modern backstage and technical facilities.

Designed by Reed Watts Architects, the theatre is being built by OSMO Projects and is intended to operate as a temporary home while work continues on the original Arts Theatre site.

All plans remain subject to the award of a premises licence.

Who is behind the new Arts Theatre venue?

The custodians of the Arts Theatre, Louis Hartshorn and Brian Hook of HH Productions, are leading the project. They are joined by Tegan Summer Theatricals as co-founders of the new venue.

The senior leadership team at HH Productions includes Andrew Mills (venues and operations), Richard Metcalfe (head of real estate) and Rebecca Woolcock (director and senior producer).

What has been said about the Marble Arch project?

Arts Theatre CEO Louis Hartshorn said the project would allow the organisation to continue entertaining audiences while preserving jobs and artistic output. He added that the venue aims to welcome up to half a million people over the next two years and maintain the spirit and programming of the Arts Theatre.

Councillor Ryan Jude, cabinet member for climate, ecology, culture and air quality at Westminster Council, said the move demonstrated the council’s commitment to supporting cultural activity in the borough. He noted that the venue would activate an iconic location while protecting the Arts Theatre’s legacy during its redevelopment.

Tegan Summer said the project offered an opportunity to redefine how a London theatre can serve artists and audiences, adding that strong industry and community support highlighted the value of innovative cultural spaces.

Programming plans for the new venue

Programming at Arts Theatre at Marble Arch will include a mix of new productions and established shows. Further details are expected to be announced in due course.
