His Last Report is written by Misha Duncan-Barry and Bridget Foreman, marking their co-writer debut. The play opens on 23 July 2025, with previews beginning on 19 July 2025, and runs until 3 August 2025 at York Theatre Royal. The production explores Seebohm Rowntree’s pioneering work to address poverty in York during the 1890s, shedding light on his vision of welfare reform and its lasting impact on the city.

Seebohm Rowntree’s Story Brought to Life

Set in the 1890s, His Last Report takes audiences to Rowntree’s Cocoa Works, where the rising demand for sugary products contrasts with the dire poverty in York’s backstreets. The play follows Seebohm Rowntree’s efforts to document and address the stark social inequalities he discovered, leading to reforms that sowed the seeds of the modern welfare state.

The production features a stellar cast, with Amelia Donkor as Guile Harlock and Antony Jardine as Seebohm Rowntree, supported by a diverse community ensemble.
