Brendan Gleeson to Lead Conor McPherson’s The Weir in the West End
Brendan Gleeson will return to the stage in a new production of Conor McPherson’s The Weir, marking his first stage performance in a decade. This highly anticipated production will bring the Olivier Award-winning play to the West End for a limited run at the Harold Pinter Theatre.
About The Weir and the Role of Brendan Gleeson
Set in a rural County Leitrim pub, The Weir explores themes of folklore, ghosts, and fairies as a group of regulars share their stories with a young woman who has recently arrived from Dublin. As the evening unfolds, she reveals her own tale, adding a deep, emotional layer to the evening’s conversation.
The play is directed by Conor McPherson, who also wrote the piece, and marks a significant return for Gleeson to the stage after a ten-year hiatus. The production will begin with a four-week run in Dublin before moving to London.

Brendan Gleeson’s West End Debut
Brendan Gleeson, renowned for his extensive career in film and television, will make his West End debut in The Weir. Gleeson expressed his excitement about returning to the stage, saying: “The Weir is one of the rarest plays around. The last time I appeared on stage was ten years ago, at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin, where I started my career. I can’t wait to be back there, and then to play in the West End for the first time, at the beautiful Pinter Theatre – and to work with Conor on his profoundly moving, inspiring and ultimately hopeful play.”

Conor McPherson, whose original script won acclaim for its captivating storytelling, also shared his excitement about working with Gleeson and bringing the play back to the stage. He said, “I can hardly believe it’s thirty years since I wrote The Weir – and about thirty years since I first met the wonderful Brendan Gleeson. It’s an absolute honour to bring this play to life again with one of the great titans of Irish acting. I’m hugely looking forward to directing my play for the very first time and sharing this production with audiences in Dublin and in London very soon.”
