I’m Sorry, Prime Minister to Transfer to the West End with Griff Rhys Jones
The critically acclaimed production I’m Sorry, Prime Minister will make its West End debut next year, following successful runs at the Barn Theatre, Theatre Royal Bath, and Cambridge Arts Theatre. This marks the first production from Barn Theatre to make the leap to the West End.
Griff Rhys Jones and Clive Francis Lead the Cast
I’m Sorry, Prime Minister will star Griff Rhys Jones as ex-Prime Minister Jim Hacker, alongside Clive Francis, who will reprise his role as the iconic Sir Humphrey Appleby. This production marks the final chapter of the Yes, Minister saga, written and directed by Jonathan Lynn. The play follows Jim Hacker and Sir Humphrey Appleby in their later years as they navigate the challenges of retirement.

A Poignant and Funny Farewell
The play is co-directed by Michael Gyngell and focuses on the two old friends as they reflect on their political careers and adjust to their changing lives in old age. Lynn, reflecting on the piece, said: “I wanted to write the final chapter about Jim Hacker and Sir Humphrey Appleby, now in their 80s, discarded, ignored, watching today’s world with utter bewilderment. An elegiac play about old age and loss – loss of power, loss of influence, loss of friends, loss of family. The only play I’ve ever seen on this theme is King Lear. This will be funnier.”
Griff Rhys Jones on His Role
On stepping into the shoes of Jim Hacker, Griff Rhys Jones shared his excitement, saying: “I am delighted and honoured to be stepping into the shoes of Jim Hacker in this, the final, funny and poignant episode of his long career.” He went on to describe the TV series and plays as being “part of my architecture of British comedy,” adding that they have always been the benchmark for political satire. He expressed his anticipation for exploring what modern politics has to offer the comedic duo: “What can the great comedy sparring partners make of what the modern world throws at them? I urge everybody – old fans, young fans and yet-to-be fans to come and join us at the Apollo to find out.”
Dates and Venue
I’m Sorry, Prime Minister will run at the Apollo Theatre from 30 January to 25 April 2026, with a press night set for 12 February 2026.
The play promises to be a hilarious and heartfelt final chapter for these beloved characters, offering a blend of sharp political commentary and endearing humour. Further casting and creative details will be announced closer to the show’s opening.
